Top 3 Right Now: Marissa’s Favorite Fantasy Reads

This week we’re featuring an awesome Top 3 list from Marissa, the new teen services guru at our Mariner Library.  Marissa loves fantasy books and reads a lot of them – these are her favorite 3 that she’s read recently, so you know they’re going to be great.

Take it away, Marissa!

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

Truthwitch, first in The Witchlands series, is sure to be a quick read for any fantasy lover. It features a vibrant world full of elemental magic and richly-drawn diverse characters brimming with personality and humor. Although there are hints of romance here and there, the heart of the story is about fierce, life-altering female friendship.

The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst

If you’re looking for a new fantasy series with some dark elements, look no further. The land of Aratay is full of malevolent, destructive spirits who want nothing more than to shred humans into tiny pieces and taste their blood. However, they need a human Queen to control their urge for violence lest they destroy all the land, themselves included. This first book in the series follows Daleina’s journey as she fights for her chance to become one of the Queen’s heirs. I really enjoyed that the characters were realistic, full of flaws and imperfections.

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo

I thought this was a very interesting take on Wonder Woman’s origin story that combined some traditional elements with new ones. It is a coming-of-age story where Diana and Alia fight against their perceived fates in order to forge their own destiny.”

Awesome suggestions, Marissa!

What about you, reader? Have you read any amazing fantasy titles lately?

Check back next week, when Jennifer from our Mill Creek Library will give us an excellent list of gender-flipped Sherlock Holmes-esque stories.
