You Count – Adopt-a-Stream & Adopt-a-Highway

streamA recent article in the Everett Herald reported that teen volunteers joined members from the Adopt-a-Stream Foundation to restore an area along Catherine Creek in Lake Stevens. The Adopt-a-Stream Foundation’s mission is “to teach people how to become stewards of their watersheds.” The Foundation welcomes volunteers. If you enjoy working outdoors or have an interest in science and nature, this type of volunteer opportunity might be a good fit for you.

Another volunteer opportunity that involves working outdoors is becoming a part of the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Adopt-a-Highway program. The goal of this program is to remove the litter that accumulates on highway roadsides. The State has more information about signing up to become a part of this program available on its website. This is a good opportunity for those who are interested in volunteering as a group and who would like a recurring task rather than a one-time experience.
