Sno-Isle Libraries will host authors Jasmine Warga and Kurt Dinan in Zoom events as part of the Reading Together program for student-age readers.
“Reading Together is a series of enriching resources and community connections centered around six no-wait ebooks for youth available this summer,” Lakewood/Smokey Point Library Manager Kaley Costello said. “The second round of ebooks are available until Aug. 17, one each for upper elementary school-, middle school–, and high school–aged students.”
In “Inside Out and Back Again,” Lai uses a series of poems to show how a young girl chronicles the life-changing year of 1975, when she, her mother, and her brothers leave Vietnam and resettle in Alabama.
In “Other Words for Home,” Warga moves the main character, Jude, and her mother to live in the safety of a relative’s home in Cincinnati, Ohio, when her Syrian community is overshadowed by violence. Jude worries for the relatives who were left behind and forges a new sense of identity shaped by friends and changing perspectives.
Dinan uses “Don’t Get Caught” to tell the story of uncool 11th-grader Max Cobb. He’s surprised by an invitation to join the Chaos Club, an exclusive group of students responsible for some of the biggest pranks at his high school.
Dinan will talk about his book in a Zoom-based event from 3-4 p.m. on Aug. 11. Warga’s event will be from 2-3 p.m. on Aug. 13. Those who register for either Zoom author visit are asked to pose their questions to the authors in advance during the online registration process.
A separate book group will meet at 4 p.m. Aug. 13 to discuss “Don’t Get Caught.”
Warga is from Cincinnati, Ohio, and now lives in the Chicago area. “Other Words for Home” has received the John Newbery Honor award, a Walter Honor, a Charlotte Huck Honor, and Lee Bennet Hopkins Poetry Prize Honor. Warga also wrote the young adult novels “My Heart and Other Black Holes” and “Here We Are Now.” Her books have been published in more than 25 countries and named to several state reading lists.
Dinan is the award-winning author of “The Scam List,” “Don’t Get Caught” and many short stories. “Don’t Get Caught” was honored as 2017 YALSA’s Teen Top 10 Winner, the Junior Library Guild Selection, the 2020 Choose to Read Ohio Selection, and the 2020 Teen Choice Illinois Book Selection. He lives in the suburbs of Cincinnati with his wife and four kids and teaches high school English.
