October is Civility Month and Sno-Isle Libraries’ civic partner Civility First is hosting a Zoom webinar discussion at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 with authors William Keith and Randall Danisch.
Keith and Danisch will discuss concepts in their new book, “Beyond Civility: The Competing Obligations of Citizenship.” Civility First is a grassroots nonprofit organization based on Whidbey Island that promotes listening to, and learning from, people with differing perspectives.
Keith is professor of rhetoric at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. He is the author of the award-winning “Democracy As Discussion: Civic Education and the American Forum Movement” and co–author of two highly regarded textbooks, “The Essential Guide to Rhetoric” and “Public Speaking: Choices and Responsibility.”
Danisch is associate professor of communication arts at the University of Waterloo. He is the author of two monographs and a popular book on communication practices, and the host of the communication skills podcast “Now We’re Talking.”
Keith, Danisch and Civility First will ask:
- What if there’s a type of civility that would make it possible to treat each other with respect without giving up our own beliefs and opinions?
- What if there’s a way to talk across political lines without demonizing the other side?
- What if we could find solutions to problems without being disloyal to “our side?”
Discussion participants will consider the difference between “weak civility” and “strong civility” and whether the torn social fabric of the country can be mended. They’ll consider if “radical civility” is a practice whose time has finally come, or if it’s irrelevant and “old school.” Participants will learn how communication is more than just sharing information, it’s about a relationship.
