You Caught My Eye: Beautiful Books

by Lindsey A.

I’m a sucker for a beautiful book. They say we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and that’s true to an extent. Authors often have no say in the appearance of their books; sometimes that decision is made by the publisher. Still, some covers are just odious.

On the other hand, book covers provide context clues, so they can matter. A friend once told me that whenever a mystery cover featured a skull in a whimsical setting, she was sold.

Just as a lousy cover can discourage me from picking up a book, a beautiful one can tempt me. Authors and publishers have really stepped up their game in recent years.

I haven’t read all of these books – each of them published in 2018 – but they sure are pretty! And in some cases, strange. Sometimes I like when I’m not quite sure what I’m looking at.

I only looked at adult books for this post; there are many beautiful books for youth, too!

As always, one reader’s trash is another reader’s treasure. We all have different aesthetic tastes. What are the best looking books you’ve seen this year?

I love a beautiful book cover! I often follow artists whose work I like just to see what other covers they’ve done. That said, the website you linked, lousybookcovers.com, made me cringe. There are some pretty horrible covers on there. One, for a book called “Scoring with the Jock” which features a sunlit field in the background, a glistening shirtless football player and a bird-like dinosaur just–yikes! I really don’t even want to guess what it’s about but it made me realize–covers really are the ambassadors between potential customers and the book’s content.

      “Dinosaur MILF.” I can’t even.

Who are some of those artists you follow? I need to start taking note of more cover artists so I can do that. I love Kevin Wada, for one. He does a lot of comic book covers, but he also did a redesign of Rainbow Rowell’s Carry On and it’s the best!
