Plot Twists

by Michelle C.

There is nothing quite like leaving a theater after having watched a movie with a plot twist. Half the audience is in shock and awe. The other half loudly claiming that they knew how it would end the whole time. I am in the first half. Even if I know going into a movie that there is a plot twist, I will have forgotten by the end and am always caught unaware. Not surprisingly, when I was a child, my mom would take me holiday shopping and then tell me to forget what I just saw her purchase. It worked every time. I was always pleasantly surprised come December 25.

I think certain genres take very well to plot twists: Suspense, Horror, Science Fiction. Some movies with plot twists end up leaving me shaken and with the feeling that nothing will ever be right in the world again. One thing is for certain, when done right, the plot twist can lead to critical acclaim.

Chinatown: A seemingly routine matrimonial snooping job mushrooms into a murderous scandal in pre-World War II Los Angeles.

Se7en: A psychological thriller about two detectives on the trail of a serial killer who chooses his victims according to the seven deadly sins.

The Others: Grace, a devoutly religious mother, has moved with her family to a mansion on the English coast, awaiting her husband’s return from the war. Her two children both suffer from a rare photosensitivity disease that renders them extremely vulnerable to sunlight, prompting the rule of having only one door open in the house at a time. When one of the children claims to see ghosts, Grace at first believes her newly-arrived family of eccentric servants to be responsible, but as events become stranger, she begins to wonder if something supernatural is indeed going on.

What are some of your favorite plot twists?
