Narrator Spotlight: Lorelei King

by Danielle Dreger-Babbitt

June is audiobook month and what better way to celebrate it than with a narrator spotlight! If you follow this blog or if you’ve ever asked for a book recommendation from me, you know that I love audiobooks. Now that I’m a mom to a tiny toddler tornado, the only real time I have to read is in the car on my commute or while I work in the yard with my head phones on. I was resistant to audiobooks for a long time, but once I discovered how a great narrator can save a boring book or bring a good book to life, I was hooked.

Of course there are narrators who ruin perfectly amazing books, but I’m not going to drop names. Much like how books are a matter of personal taste, so are narrators.

22Lorelei King is one of my favorite narrators. And while she has appeared on TV and in film, she’s narrated over 200 audiobooks. I first discovered her as the narrator for Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels. I’m not embarrassed at all to admit that I read each Stephanie Plum novel the minute it comes out. Stephanie Plum is a hilarious, emotionally-stunted (and terrible) bounty hunter and Lorelei King captures the very essence that is Stephanie and brings her to life so vividly, it’s like Stephanie is riding shotgun in my car and recounting how her new car has been blown up and how distracting Ranger is and why she and Joe Morelli are on another break. It would be easy for a narrator to turn Stephanie’s mishaps into a cheap chick lit joke, but Lorelei King gives Stephanie enough tenacity and spark to make her likable even when Evanovich writes her a ditz who can’t decide between her two love interests after 22 books. Where Lorelei King really shines though, is when she does the sassy, street-smart dialogue of Lula, who is easily my favorite character.warning

You can also capture Lorelei King’s verbal prowess as she narrates Jane Smiley’s Early Warning, Debbie Macomber’s Silver Linings, and Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson books (not to mention books by Darynda Jones and Patricia Cornwell). Her narration is perfect for mystery, suspense and thrillers. Check her out today!
