Meet the Author Next Door: Richard Spelman

by Richard Spelman

RichSpelmanI was born in Seattle, and spent my early years in the great NW before having the good fortune to be moved to the great state of Hawaii at the age of 11. I graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1985 with a B.Ed. and in the years that followed worked as an teacher for the Honolulu school system. Though I enjoyed teaching I decided to pursue a career in the fire service and have been fortunate to be a fire fighter; first with the Honolulu Fire Department, and then after returning to the great NW, with the Seattle Fire Department. I’ve been with SFD for over 20 years now. I am the lucky husband of my wife Sylvia and the proud father of my two grown children Jane’e and Ryan. With their support, and the encouragement of other family and friends, I now get tell my stories. I hope they make parents and children smile.

My Current Top 3: (not in order of importance)ANDSocialMedia

  1. English Bulldogs: I have the good fortune to have 2 of these silly dogs; Stan and Ed. They are a constant source of joy and amusement; also, they somehow have come to be in charge of things.
  2. Surfing: I have surfed since my first weeks in Hawaii and I will always love the thrill of the ride and never lose my respect for the ocean.
  3. Storytelling/reading for children: I have always loved children and find no greater joy then hearing children laugh and seeing them smile! I still find it hard to believe that I am a published author and the serendipitous path that brought me to where I find myself today.

Meet Mr. Spelman at the Author Next Door event at Sultan Library, Saturday, November 21 from 1-2:30 pm.
