LibraryReads List May 2018

by Emily Z.

It’s that time again–time to begin the transition from sweaters to summer tops and also to unveil the May book picks from LibraryReads. Maybe keep an extra sweater in your car, though. The sun will make up its mind soon.

The LibraryReads readers have selected a vivid array of titles this month, from bright swaths of romantic and artistic passion to several darkly deceptive tales of suspense. The book at the top of the heap this time is Furyborn, a YA fantasy epic with action, twists, and ferocious females à la “Game of Thrones” and “The Hunger Games.”

Tin Man is also apparently blowing people away. It explores love–that of friends, lovers, and others–between three fully realized, deeply human characters. Sarah Winman’s prose is quickly gaining a reputation as stylistically complex, poetical, and captivating.

Personally, I have my eye on Paper Ghosts, which features two potentially unreliable lead characters. A young woman takes custody of an elderly man with dementia, claiming to be his adult daughter. On the shared, uneasy road trip that follows, we learn that the man was once acquitted of several murders and the woman is obsessed with those deaths. The man suspects the woman of lying about their relationship. The woman suspects that the man is of a sounder mind than he lets on. It is unclear which of these characters is more dangerous.

So, anything here catching your eye? Any other May releases you want to talk about? Let us know in the comments.
