Celebrating Pride and the LGBT Community

by Michelle C.

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. After the senseless loss of so many lives during the Orlando shooting, it has become even more important to celebrate and honor Pride.

Buzzfeed recently compiled a list of 27 Movies That Actually Represent LGBT People Accurately and the library has most of the films!  Many of these movies were chosen because of their themes of hope and love. Some are heartbreaking while others show the possibilities of what life could be like when #lovewins.

pridePride is inspired by an extraordinary true story.  It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families.  Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person.  As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.

bigedenBig Eden has won the audience awards at just about every gay and lesbian film festival there is. Henry is an artist living in New York but still carrying a torch for the guy he had a crush on in high school. When his grandfather has a stroke, Henry returns to his Montana hometown, Big Eden, where he rediscovers friends he hasn’t seen in years. His high school crush has since married, had children, and divorced–and seems ready to take some very different steps with his life.

rentRent focuses on a year in the life of a group of friends in New York’s East Village. It is carefree until Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, and Roger, an aspiring songwriter, find out they owe a year’s rent to Benny. Roger has also attracted the attention of his downstairs neighbor, Mimi. Mark’s former girlfriend, Maureen, has found a new romance in a lawyer named Joanne. Philosophy professor Tom finds his soul mate in drag queen Angel.
