Beyond Bestsellers: Humor

By Kristi S.

Here we are in the merry month of May, and we are ready to celebrate the sunny days ahead with our next Beyond Bestsellers theme: Humor. If you need a refresher on what Beyond Bestsellers is all about, here’s a quick recap. Each month, we are challenging our reading habits by trying new genres. As you read, be sure to make lists of your book journey to inspire other readers to branch out. This month is certainly a departure from the norm for me, as I tend to gravitate towards dark, depressing books. In the spirit of the season, I set those aside and dove deep into humorous reading.

Beyond Bestsellers: Humor Sampler

Every day at the library, I talk to people looking for stories to make them laugh. That’s understandable. Life can be a real bummer and reading is such a wonderful escape from these stresses. Luckily, there are a lot of funny people in the world writing hilarious books. On top of our favorite funny fictional characters, there’s been a trend towards popular comedians, bloggers, and podcasters turning to literature to share their humor. While this means we’ve got a wide variety of options for humorous reading, choosing a title can be intimidating.

Humor is so subjective and it can be hard to know what kind of humor to expect from an author. Because of this, we’ve compiled diverse lists of titles to suit many tastes and preferences. If you already know what you like, head over to our lists for suggestions in fiction, nonfiction, romance, mystery, and audio. Not sure where to start? Take our quiz! It’s always fun to answer questions and see where they lead you. You might be surprised by your result.

One of my absolute favorite ways to read humor is through audio. Listening to a funny audiobook is almost like going to a stand-up routine, but without the inevitably awkward, cringe-worthy silence when a joke does not land. That’s a win-win to me. This month, we have a treasure trove of eAudio books that you can download without waiting. Check out My Man Jeeves, What If?, Texts From Jane Eyre, Kerplunk!, and The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club for an entire month of humorous reading.

So are you ready for a laugh? Help us get the month started by sharing your quiz results, favorite funny reads, and favorite authors in the comments.
