Beyond Bestsellers: Armchair Travel

By Marie B

Whether you enjoy reading someone else’s real life exploits, immersing yourself in a locale by way of a great story, or simply looking at the pictures, books can take you where you want to go. This month for Beyond Bestsellers we’ll look at books with a focus on places other than home.  I invite you to revisit the concept of Beyond Bestsellers before you begin January’s journey.

Aren’t we lucky to live in this exact spot in the beautiful Pacific Northwest?  We have not one, but two mountain ranges, plus Puget Sound, the Salish Sea, not to mention the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  It doesn’t get much better than this.  But sometimes…

Wanderlust can strike even the most dedicated homebody.  Most often, you will feel the pull during the grey, damp winter months.  What can you do?  Travel by book!

You don’t have to take out a second mortgage, or even break open the piggy bank to journey to a distant shore.  A good book can take you there.  What’s more, you can travel without worrying about getting sand in your shorts or dealing with airport delays.  The very best part of traveling by book is there is absolutely no limit to where you can go.  Go to Timbuktu and really get away from it all.  For an out-of-this-world adventure, visit Mars.  After all, the sky is no limit when you travel by book.

Enjoy no-wait access to several titles from OverDrive in January.  Read Unbound: A Story of Snow and Self-Discovery, a heartwarming memoir by Steph Jagger.  Tour Germany, the United Kingdom, Egypt, the U.S.-Mexican border, and India by downloadable audio book!  These titles are also available in other formats, too.

The world is your oyster.

With so many options, how can you possibly choose your reading destination?  Allow us to act as your travel agent by way of this quiz.

We’ll round out the month with user-made lists. If you’d like to share a travelicious list, please preface the title with “Beyond Bestsellers” so we can find it.

Do you have a suggestion for us?

Please share it in the comments below.

I love this quiz! It’s so inventive. I got the photography travel option, which is perfect. Now if only the books weren’t so massive! Sometimes I walk out of the library feeling lopsided.

I’m so glad you enjoyed the quiz. A wheelbarrow might come in handy to get more than two of those massive travel photography books home. Happy trails!
