Awards Round-up: June 2016

by Liz

Welcome to The Biblio Files’ June Awards Round-up. This month’s awards are quite the eclectic mix! A little something for everyone, as the saying goes! Heresies

First up this month, we have the BAILEYS Women’s Prize for Fiction. One of the UK’s most prestigious literary awards, the WPFF is awarded annually and celebrates the best full-length fiction written by a woman. This year’s honor goes to The Glorious Heresies by Lisa McInherney. A biting, moving, and darkly funny tale of how a murder affects five misfits living on the fringes of society in modern Ireland.

The first week in June also brought us the Lambda Literary Awards. Bringing together 600 attendees, the Lammys as they are known, celebrate excellence in LGBTQ publishing. To quote The Guardian newspaper,”Steeped as they are in celebrity and ceremony, the Lammys aren’t as stuffy or straight as many LGBT awards shows often are: they were unabashedly, gleefully queer, representing the many facets of queer life.” Looks like a fun red carpet to me!

The best in country music videos and television performances were honored at the CMT Music Awards earlier this month, as well. The night’s top winner: Carrie Underwood. Not only did she win Female Video of the Year, she also won the CMT Performance of the Year Award!

Next up, we have the Spur Awards. Awarded annually by the Western Writers of America since 1953, the Spur Awards honor distinguished writing about the American West in a number of different categories ranging from Best Western Traditional Novel to Best Western Drama Script.  Looking for a new western author? Give Shann Ray a chance. His American Copper won this year’s Spur for Best First Novel.

June also brings us the Locus Awards. Voted on by the readers of Locus Magazine, this set of awards honors the best science fiction and fantasy writing of the past year. The award ceremony took place this past weekend right here in Seattle. Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie won the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, with the Best Fantasy Novel award going to Uprooted by Naomi Novik.

And to round out our list, we have the BET Awards. The ceremonies were kicked off with an amazing performance by Queen Bey and Kendrick Lamar. Wow! Also worth watching are multiple tributes to Prince featured in the ceremony. More wows! Enjoy!

  1. And the Tonys! We should have CDs and streaming versions of many of the musical cast albums! Four out of five of the Best Musical nominee cast albums are available on Hoopla (Hamilton, Waitress, Bright Star, School of Rock. Not available: Shuffle Along). Best Revival Musical: Three of them have original cast albums available (Fiddler, Color Purple, Spring Awakening) and one (She Loves Me) has the 2016 cast on Hoopla.

  2. Shann Ray says:
