APA Announces Audie Finalists

by Michelle C.

If you are anything like me, you love a good audiobook–especially when it’s well done. I used to drive down to Oregon to visit my parents (7 hour trip!) and the only way it was bearable was to listen to audiobooks. If the narrator is good, the novel comes alive and you never want to stop driving (but you do because everyone needs bathroom breaks). That is why I am so excited that the Audio Publisher’s Association has announced the Audie Finalists.

The Audie is an award for distinction in audiobooks and spoken entertainment. There are 25 categories ranging from Autobiography to Young Listeners. My favorite categories are Best Female/Male Narrator, Humor, and Multi-Voiced Performance. For me a large part of the enjoyment of an audiobook lies in the narrator.

lair of dreamsOne of my favorite narrators, January LaVoy has been nominated for her narration of Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray. She also narrated the first book in the series, The Diviners. If you have never listened to a book narrated by January LaVoy, do yourself a favor and give her a try.

Breakfast  John Malkovich has been nominated for his narration of Breakfast of Champions, a bizarre and exuberant satire about a writer and a Midwest car dealer. I can’t think of anything better than a Malkovich/Vonnegut combination.

Born with teethIf you like books narrated by the author, try Born with Teeth, an elegant and often funny memoir about the actress’ career and the child she gave up for adoption, narrated by Kate Mulgrew (from Star Trek Voyager and Orange is the New Black).

Check out the entire list of Audie Finalists and share your favorites in the comments. The winners will be announced on May 11th.
