On April 6, 2016, the American Booksellers Association (ABA) awarded two titles for the E.B. White Read Aloud Award. The winners were chosen by a committee of six children’s booksellers from The Association of Booksellers for Children (ABC), in collaboration with ABA. The award is divided into two categories: The E. B. White Read Aloud Award for Picture Books and The E. B. White Read Aloud Award for Older Readers (Middle Grade).

This award was established in 2004 to honor titles that “reflect the playful, well-paced language, the engaging themes, and the universal appeal to a wide range of ages embodied by E.B. White’s collection of beloved books” (ABA).

E.B. White is well known as the author of Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan. I remember reading Charlotte’s Web in class with my third grade teacher. It was one of the first chapter books assigned in school, and I was deeply touched by the love between wise Charlotte and tenderhearted Wilbur.

The 2016 winners are as follows!

Mother BruceIn the Picture Book category, Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins was the 2016 winner.

Bruce is a grumpy bear who enjoys nothing but cooking and eating eggs, but his plans are foiled when the batch of eggs he collects hatch… and the newborn goslings believe he is their mother. I was very happy for this news because I adored this book. I even gifted it to my toddler niece over the holidays.

Thing About JellyfishIn the Middle Grade category, The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin was the 2016 winner.

After her best friend drowns, 12-year-old Suzy Swanson deals with her grief by investigating the rare breed of jellyfish she believes were responsible for her friend’s death. While this book is still on my never-ending to-read list, I can tell you that I’ve heard only glowing praise from those who have read it. It was also a 2015 National Book Award Finalist.
