16 and ’16: Read a Staff Pick Feedback

by KP

Welcome back, esteemed readers! We’re officially halfway through our tenth Reading Resolutions challenge, Read a Staff Pick. Have you spoken to a Sno-Isle staff member to see what we’re reading or what we suggest for you? Maybe you consulted the Great Oracle (our staff pick quiz) or browsed the weekly Our Suggestions booklist to find your latest Reading Resolutions title?

Either way, here’s some feedback from other participants:

Available in book, ebook, audiobook, and eaudiobook formats

Jackie: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. Even if this wasn’t a wonderful romp that helped me as a Mom and also reminded me how I felt as an unpopular, loner, artsy teenager; the music playlist alone is worth the read. I will always love that my teen daughter and I both loved the book causing her holiday wish list to include items from the awesome mix-tape: CD’s by The Smiths, Joy Division, and others. We both gave each other a copy of the book for Christmas, to our surprise. She’s re-read it several times and can quote it.

KP: Because I’m anxious for it to be October (Halloween is my favorite holiday), I read The Demonists by Thomas E. Sniegoski. A husband/wife paranormal investigative team (one an experienced exorcist, the other an acclaimed psychic medium) peaked my interest immediately. When a terrible accident leaves medium Theo possessed by a legion of demons, I knew I was hooked. The novel unfolds like one of my beloved horror movies and I was riveted until the end. I can’t wait to read the other books in the dark urban fantasy series.

Christopher: I had never cared much for fantasy novels, but I decided to listen to Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johnson after seeing it as a staff recommendation. I loved it. Listening to the narrator read with such passion really brought the story to life and I couldn’t stop listening. I even got goosebumps at some of the critical action in the story. This book has persuaded me to let go of my skepticism and give fantasy another try. Great suggestion!

That’s high praise, Christopher! For those of you swayed by Christopher’s positive feedback, we still have no wait digital access for The Queen of the Tearling and Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter available through Overdrive! If you’re still looking for a Staff Pick, come to any Sno-Isle library information desk and chat with us (we’d love to hear from you!), or request reading suggestions virtually through our Ask Us, Tell Us software.

Keep up the good work, readers. Remember to log those entries and happy reading!

Very pleased to see Beautiful Ruins available in no wait digital Overdrive. Thoroughly entertaining, romantic and funny. One of my favorite books to recommend. My husband’s favorite book of 2012.
